Early Division, ages 3 - 7
For Ages: 3 to 7 years-old
About the Level: Training at the Dance Institute of Washington begins in the Early Division. This division has 5 levels: First Position I (Age 3), First Position II (Age 4), Plié I (Age 5), Plié II (Age 6), and Plié III (Age 7). Early Division is an intentionally creative realm that is age-appropriate. The overall objective is to engage in and enjoy dance while building a solid foundation of balletic movement. This division focuses on imaginative play, coordination, energy words, spatial awareness, directionality, balance, and motor skills.
Note: All young dancers must be potty-trained in order to participate in our Early Division.
Placement Audition: None required
Registration & Enrollment Process:

Step 1: The registration period for Early Division dancers is now open. For those who have already completed their registration, please follow the steps below.

Step 2: You will receive a confirmation email and access to your Enrollment Portal (“Parent Portal”).
3.
Step 3: In order to complete the enrollment process, you must submit all required enrollment forms by the given deadline. Enrollment forms will be provided to you by our Registration & Enrollment Specialist, Erin Johnson, and can be submitted in-person or via email (ejohnson@danceinstitute.org).
4.
Step 4: You will receive enrollment confirmation communications from our Registration & Enrollment Specialist, Erin Johnson.
Lower Division, ages 8 - 11
For Ages: 8 – 11 years-old
About the Level: This division consists of 3 levels: Tendu I, II, and III. In this division, we introduce clear dance genres and have higher expectations of students so that we can effectively teach these genres. At this stage, our instructors begin to give specific support to the students so that they execute movements correctly and minimize the risk of injury long-term. Successful completion of the Lower Division means that a student has a serious approach to their training, proper class etiquette, and a firm grasp on basic technique in dance.
Placement Audition: Yes, placement auditions are required for newly enrolling dancers age 8 and up. Attending a Placement Audition does not guarantee a place in our Program as space is limited.
Registration & Enrollment Process:
1.
Step 1: The audition period for prospective students has now ended. For those who have already completed their placement audition, please follow the steps below.
2.
Step 2: DIW will notify families of the dancer’s results from the placement audition within two weeks. Results will include the specific Level the dancer has been placed in. In Lower Division, the options are Tendu I, II, or III. Please note that attending the placement audition does not guarantee a place in our program as space is limited.
If your dancer is not accepted into our program or we do not have space, we will notify you by email within two weeks of the audition date. Please do not continue to steps 4 and 5 until you have received confirmation from DIW. Registering in Jackrabbit and paying the registration fee do not guarantee placement in our program.

Step 3: Once you have received confirmation from DIW, please complete the online registration form. (You will receive the registration link via email from our Registration & Enrollment Specialist, Erin Johnson.)
4.
Step 4: In order to complete the enrollment process, you must submit all required enrollment forms by the given deadline. Enrollment forms will be provided to you by our Registration & Enrollment Specialist, Erin Johnson, and can be submitted in-person or via email (ejohnson@danceinstitute.org).
5.
Step 5: Look for an email from DIW staff including the dancer’s final schedule and financial offer where applicable.
Middle Division, ages 11 - 14
For Ages: 11 – 14 years-old
About the Level: Upon entry into this division, students begin cultivating their personal development. The division consists of 3 levels: Relevé I, II, and III. Students are introduced to Ballet Theory and expand their genre training to include African, Hip Hop, Repertoire, and more. Male students in this division transition into classes with our male faculty that explicitly focus on the male physiology as it relates to dance.
Placement Audition: Yes, placement auditions are required for newly enrolling dancers age 8 and up. Attending a Placement Audition does not guarantee a place in our Program as space is limited.
Prerequisite: Female-identifying must pass and complete beginner pointe training.

Upper Division, ages 14 - 18
For Ages: 14 – 18 years-old
About the Level: This division is separated into 2 levels: Upper Division I and Upper Division II. This division is focused on preparing our students for their exit from High School and their entrance into a career. Whether they hope to matriculate in higher education, join a professional dance company, and/or get an agent, our Upper Division curriculum prepares them for it as well as how to prioritize long-term health and wellness.
Placement Audition: Yes, placement auditions are required for newly enrolling dancers age 8 and up. Attending a Placement Audition does not guarantee a place in our Program as space is limited.
