Year-Round Campaign
Boys in Ballet
Help us eliminate barriers and create opportunities for young men in ballet through the Fabian Barnes Scholarship Program.
“Male dancers break barriers every day, challenging stereotypes about masculinity with strength and resilience. Let’s honor the courage it takes to step into the spotlight, defy expectations, and embrace artistry with pride.”
Why It Matters
Strength, Discipline, Resilience
Concert dance has long been seen through a lens that discourages young Black and Latino men from participating. Misconceptions about masculinity, coupled with societal pressures and a lack of representation, have created an environment where young men of color interested in dance face bullying, harassment, and discouragement. The Dance Institute of Washington is committed to creating a welcoming, empowering space and offering holistic resources for young men of color to explore their artistic passions.
The Fabian Barnes Scholarship Program honors the legacy of DIW’s late founder, Fabian Barnes. A former soloist with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Mr. Barnes was dedicated to nurturing young talent and advocating for diversity in the arts. The Fabian Barnes Scholarship program aims to empower young men, offering full tuition coverage for their dance training.
Participants will benefit from DIW’s holistic dance education model, training in a variety of dance styles, including Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and African. Programming is tailored to the unique strengths and experiences of male dancers. The program emphasizes not only technical skills—strength, agility, and technique—but also personal growth, creating an environment that encourages vulnerability, healing, and self-expression.
Students will benefit from direct mentorship, working closely with experienced male dancers who can offer guidance and support. By continuing Fabian’s legacy, we are fostering a new generation of diverse and talented male dancers, empowering them to pursue their passions and thrive in the dance community.
