The Spirit of Kwanzaa
Building on the Legacy

December 17th- December 19th, 2021

About the production

“The Spirit of Kwanzaa,” the Dance Institute of Washington’s most popular and longest-running (since 1995) cultural arts and dance production, is a uniquely African American winter holiday celebration that draws on the agricultural ceremonies of Africa. The Dance Institute of Washington has adapted the seven principles of Kwanzaa into rich storytelling through various art forms, portraying the struggles, resilience, and creativity within the Black experience.

This year we are Building on the Legacy! With our recent groundbreaking of the Fabian Black Box Theater, The Dance Institute of Washington is excited to present this historic production in honor of The Spirit of Kwanzaa's creator and DIW founder, the late Fabian Barnes.
