Advance

Advancing equity in the dance industry worldwide.

Propelled by the power of dance to affect systemic change, Dance Institute of Washington carries on the legacy of visionary founder, Fabian Barnes. The commitment to advancing racial and economic equity in the dance industry is threaded through all DIW language, programming, and action. Built upon this foundational mission are DIW’s innovative methods and programming designed through decades of experience serving D.C. youth and our community.

Having piloted a range of specific programs that are advancing equity in the dance performance and dance education industries, DIW Advance is in the process of testing, listening, refining, and designing new ways to manifest this core portion of our mission into programming, partnerships, and experiences that impact individuals and organizations worldwide. Recent DIW Advance programs include: delivering training and professional development intensives for dancers at La Compañía Nacional de Danza in Ecuador; sharing best practices at an equity symposium with the National Ballet of Canada; hosting Salsa in the Streets to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Washington D.C.; teaching remote live streamed dance classes to students in Uganda with hearing impairments.
